Visiting the Special Education School

Started off my with an amazing hour long run! We ran into the mountains on a trail that connected the center of Nebaj to a small rural pueblo. To say it was beautiful would be an understatement. We were running next to a river surrounded by trees and ended at a water fall!

After our run I had eggs and salsa for breakfast and they were sure to not give me beans because I finally voiced my dislike for them! We then walked to the special education school and played with the kids for an hour and a half. It is really amazing that this school exists in Guatemala and is officially recognized and funded by the government. But what is so sad is how the families of these kids treat these kis. For the most part they dont believe these kids are capable of anything or worth caring for. The most horrible example of this was a story we heard about one of these kids found alone  on a street corner pregnant probably having been raped by a random man. It really puts things into perspective. But these kids were adorable and some did not even seem like they had a problem.

Playing with the kids!

Such a cute little boy who always tried to steal my camera and make me take pics

They loved the hula hoops

Always doing our hair- and notice the girl with the indigenous clothing on, she was so adorable

My hair that I wore the whole day!

Lunch is the biggest meal of the day here and today we all went back to our home stays to have lunch with them. All kids come home from school for lunch so it was a family affair. We had steak, rice, potatoes, and salad.

After playing with the kids we sat down with all the teachers of the school to talk about a fundraising even we are going to be helping with. On Wednesday we are setting up a small carnival to raise money for the school. It consists of selling food each of the kids is going to bring along with other donated food, selling bracelets and weaving work the kids made, painting faces, and a soccer bowling game. On monday we are going to do publicity and talk to a bunch of schools to tell them to bring their students. We made posters for the event today and did a lot of planning.

Tomorrow we have a free day and we are planning on going horse back riding and taking a weaving class! I am excited!
