The Arrival: Day 1

After two three hour plane rides which of course I slept every second of, we arrived in Guatemala! We were picked up by Anne and Krystal in a large van, packed all of our stuff on the roof of the van and we were off to a hostal in Antigua where we are to stay for two nights. We received our phones and homestay family information. My family currently has 7 people living in the home in which I will be the 8th. There are two boys that are 21 and 23 and two girls which are 16 and 11 along with the parents and the abuela. I am excited to meet them Monday!
We arrived at Hostal Antigua in which our room has 4 bunk beds all of which are filled with other Duke students. We exchanged our dollars for quetzals, played ice breaker games, and was cooked dinner by our hostal. It was a great meal for my first meal in Guatemala! They had extra vegetarian plates where I got a very large plate of Eggplant and Zucchini (what a Jordyn meal).
After dinner we happened upon a japanese restaurant that could play the knicks game. Then we roamed around the town of Antigua, of course with a large map in hand, where we found two fun places we will be sure to return to. Antigua is a pretty small and navigable city (even for me) that is beautiful (many pictures to come). There were many young people out at night and we were definitely dressed on the conservative side compared to the locals and other travelers.
Overall, it was a great first day and I am excited to continue to get to know everyone in my program during these first few days.
